Photographs taken by Armando PIcciotto and Geri Brown in the Palouse Region of
the Western United States.
The Palouse is a region of the northwestern United States, encompassing parts of
southeastern Washington and northcentral Idaho. It is somewhat reminiscent of
Tuscany, in Italy, while the main crop here is still wheat and rapeseed (Canola),
vineyards are becoming more prevalent. It is approximately 3,000 square miles
of beautiful rolling hills and farmland with rich history, small town charm and
spectacular scenic vistas. Barns and sheds dot the landscape, many of them old
and in ruins, some restored. The old wooden Palouse barns are rapidly
disappearing, becoming either superfluous or being replaced by modern ones
made mostly of sheet metal.
The Palouse is a photographically exciting area to explore, in large measure
because it is comparatively unknown. It is not a national park, and there is little in
the way of guidance to this area. The major towns are Pullman, home of
Washington State University and Moscow Idaho, home of the University of Idaho.
The photographs were taken in the Spring of 2011.
